Staff Sergeant Raphael A. Futrell, 26, of Anderson, died March 25, 2009 in Baghdad from injuries sustained in a non-combat related incident. A member of the Army, Futrell was in the 13th MP Detachment, 728th Military Police BN, 8th MP Brigade, 8th Theater Sustainment Command.
He was deployed once before to Afghanistan where he served as a military policeman guarding captured Taliban soldiers. During his service, Futrell received an Iraq Campaign Medal, an Afghanistan Campaign Medal, a Global War on Terrorism Service Medal six Army Achievement Medals, an Army Commendation Medal, two Army Good Conduct Medals, and a National Defense Service Medal.
Futrell graduated from Pendleton High School in 2001.
