SPC Thomas Caughman was assigned to the 3rd Platoon, Alpha Company of the 458th Engineering Battalion in Baghdad, Iraq. On June 9, 2004, while on a mission to locate roadside bombs, Caughman's platoon was ambushed by insurgents and the Humvee on which he was the turret gunner was struck by rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire, resulting in his death.
SPC Caughman's military awards include the Army Service Ribbon, the National Defense Service Medal, the Army Reserve Component Achievement Medal, the Armed Forces Reserve Medal with "M" Device, the Global War on Terrorism Expeditionary Medal, the Purple Heart, and the Bronze Star. He was from Lexington, SC, where his family still resides.
